Distinguished Alumnus John Gentry is Mayor of McMinn County. He received his BA in History in 1992 from Lee University and later received his M.A. in Public Policy in 1995 at Regent University. Gentry was also certified as a Public Administrator in 2000 through the University of Tennessee Institute for Public Service.

Prior to his job as McMinn County Mayor, Gentry has served as Assistant to McMinn County Executive and was appointed McMinn County Clerk and Master. He has also received awards including 2002 Athens Area Chamber of Commerce Young Man of the Year in 2004 and was selected for University of Tennessee's Local Government Leadership Program.
